Austin Scottish Country Dance Society
The history of Scottish country dancing goes back at least three centuries. The intervening years have seen it flourish and decline, until it was rediscovered in the 1920s under the auspices of the (then) Scottish Country Dance Society chaired by Jean Milligan and Ysobel Stewart of Fasnacloich, and started to mushroom into its current, internationally popular form.
Scottish country dance is somewhat similar to square dance, however none of the moves are called out. Dancers must remember the proper sequence of figures for a dance. Over 8,000 dances are recorded, of which perhaps a couple of hundred are frequently performed. Join the Austin Scottish Country Dance group as they share their love of Scottish Dance.
They are people of all ages and ethnicities who enjoy music, dancing, and good company. No prior dance experience is necessary to get started and partners are not required. The Austin group holds regular weekly classes, monthly social dances and an annual St. Andrews Ball. Members of the group also do performances and demonstrations.
